Mountain Bike Anatomy Useful Information

A robust mountain bike is the one item you’ll need before you go bicycling in the mountains, but these bikes hold many parts, that will be covered below:

1. Bottom bracket - This attaches to the bike’s crank set on the physical structure of a bicycle.

2. Brake cable – This cable connects the brake lever to the brake mechanism.

3. Brake lever - The lever on the cycle’s handlebar to work the brakes with the left handle operating the front most brake then the right hand is the rear brake.

4. Chain - The circle-shaped set of links that move power away from the chain ring over to the cogs.

5. Chain ring - The serrated rings which connect to the crank to hold the chain.

6. Crank - The lever that protrudes out of the bottom bracket to the pedal point, moving that energy to the chain rings.

7. Derailleur – The gearing mechanism for moving the chain from one cog to the other cog.

8. Down tube - The part of the body that extends down from the bike’s stem to the bottom bracket.

9. Front shock – The shock absorber on the forward fork.

10. Handlebar - The long bar attached to the stem with grips at the end.

11. Headset - The device located in the front of the frame that connects the forward fork to the stem and handlebars.

12. Hub - The center section of the wheel which your wheel spokes are attached to.

13. Idler pulley - The bottom pulley of the rear derailleur which gives the spring rigitiy to to maintain the chain’s tightness.

14. Nipple - A threaded repository which connects the spoke to the rim.

15. Pedal - The platform to pedal on, it attaches to the crank.

16. Back shock - The cushion of the back wheel for dual suspension system style bikes.

17. Rim - The metallic ring that holds the spokes on the inside and the tire to the outside.

18. Saddle – Where you sit.

19. Seat post – provides support for your seat.

20. Skewer - The metal pole that runs through the hub, connecting the wheel to the dropouts on it’s frame.

21. Spindle - The loose spinning axle which the crank arms connect to, it is also a part of the bottom bracket.

22. Spokes - The thick wires which connect the hub to the rim.

23. Stem - A part that joins the bike’s handlebar to the steering column.

24. Wheel hub - The middle of the tire that the spokes are connected with.
